Spartak Moscow’s Aiden McGeady is a doubt for the Republic of Ireland’s upcoming World Cup qualifiers after the winger missed out on Spartak’s game at the weekend with a lingering knee injury.
Expected to start for the Republic of Ireland against Sweden in place of Anthony Pilkington who picked up a hamstring strain at the weekend, McGeady has not yet recovered sufficiently from the knee injury which has dogged him over recent weeks.
Norwich’s Pilkington had played against Southampton with strapping on his thigh as a precaution however he had to be substituted after only 35 minutes after being on the receiving end of a challenge by Maya Yoshida.
Pilkington has already withdrawn from the Republic of Ireland squad and looks set to miss out on Norwich’s next fixtures as the City medical staff assess the extent of his injury.
The Republic of Ireland travel to Stockholm to face Sweden on March 22nd and then play Austria at home four days later.by
