Arteta major doubt for Arsenal’s crunch game against Newcastle

Arsenal’s Mikel Arteta is a major doubt for the Gunner’s Champions League decider and final Premier League game against Newcastle on Sunday after the influential midfielder was taken off with a calf strain.

Speaking after the match, manager Arsene Wenger said

He is not alright, he pulled his calf so that could be a problem for Sunday. We don’t know, we have to wait for 24 hours. He is a massive doubt for Sunday. He is very important, that is why I don’t rule him out at the moment. Maybe we will have to push Wilshere in [if he doesn’t make it]. I don’t know.

Jack Wilshere has been used sparingly for Arsenal lately after it was revealed that the midfielder would need to undergo surgery to remove a troublesome pin from the same ankle which kept him sidelined for 14 months.

If Arsenal win against Newcastle they will qualify for the Champions League for the 16th season in a row.

Arsenal finished the season in third place in the Injury League table, an improvement on their previous second place finishes.
