Arsenal’s Smith named in England squad despite injury

Hope Powell has named Kelly Smith in her England squad for the European Championships which will take place in Sweden next month despite the fact that the record goalscorer has not played since March as she recovers from a shin injury.

Smith, who plays for Arsenal ladies, last game was in her club’s 301 win over ASD Torres in the Champions League, however Powell is prepared to gamble on the fitness of the striker and take her to what will be her sixth major tournament.

Speaking about the decision, Powell said

“A lot of players in this squad have appeared in major tournaments before and that experience will certainly serve them well in Sweden.

“We will need that experience because we are in a very tough group, but looking at the amount of caps this squad has amassed, I don’t think there is any reason for them to be fazed.”

Casey Stoney and Karen Carney are also included despite suffering hamstring and ankle injuries respectively.

England are ranked fourth in the Fifa World rankings and came through qualifying undefeated.

They will play their first game of the tournament on July 12th against Spain before facing hosts Sweden on July 4th.
