Manchester United’s Tom Cleverley has been ruled out of the England World Cup qualifiers after the midfielder picked up a calf injury during training with the national team on Thursday.
The decision has been made by the England medical team who concluded that it would be best if he did not take part in England’s games against Montenegro tonight [Friday] and Poland on Tuesday after seeing the results of a scan on the injury.
Although Cleverley was unlikely to start the game for Roy Hodgson’s side it will come as a blow to England’s midfielder options who could also be without Jack Wilshere who is not fully fit as he suffers with a heavy cold.
The FA issued a statement that Cleverly would return to Old Trafford to undergo treatment under the care of the Manchester United medics rather than remain with the England squad.
It is not clear how serious the injury is at this stage nor if he is likely to be sidelined for Manchester United when the Premier League resumes.by
