Everton defender suffers toe fracture in Liverpool game

According to the Daily Express, Everton have confirmed that defender Leighton Baines has suffered a toe fracture and is likely to be out for ‘several weeks’ after picking up the injury in the Merseyside derby against Liverpool.

The defender was substituted not long in to the second half after limping out from the tunnel at halftime. The injury was picked up when Liverpool’s Jordan Henderson landed on his toe accidentally in the Everton box during the first half.

Everton will not know the full extent of the injury for at least another 48 hours, presumably as they wait for swelling to subside but the news that he has definitely fractured his toe will come as a blow to the player and the club.

While it is not clear how long Baines will be out for he is certain to miss Everton’s trip to Old Trafford on December fourth. Baines was the subject of much transfer speculation between the two clubs during the summer with Manchester United submitting a bid for the player.
