Arsenal star reveals England nerves, Liverpool player inspiration + World Cup kit

Arsenal’s Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has revealed that he was too nervous to eat when he received his first England call-up.

Meeting at the team hotel, he took a seat alongside Danny Welbeck and Ashley Young but wasn’t sure if he would be able to eat his soup because of the players he was surrounded by.

Speaking exclusively to the Sun, the Ox said

“My first England call-up was right before the Euros and we went up to the Lowry Hotel in Manchester.

“I remember getting my soup in the restaurant and sitting next to Danny Welbeck and Ashley Young — I couldn’t eat.

“I was thinking about how to pick up a spoon and what I looked like when I put it in my mouth. I was wondering ‘Do I look weird?’.

“When you first arrive, you don’t know who sits where, if they sit in a certain seat in the restaurant.

“Being surrounded by players you have always watched and looked up to is quite something.

“These are players you hold in such high regard — and then you are sat with them casually.

“It was amazing to play with Stevie Gerrard and Frank Lampard.

“I will also be thankful for players like Stevie who took me under their wing and helped massively. He is a great leader and always helps the boys out. So if I could ever help a younger player, I would.”

Missing out on the first half of the season after picking up a knee injury against Aston Villa on the opening day of the season, Oxlade-Chamberlain has stormed back in to form and looks certain to join the rest of the England squad when they head to Brazil this summer.

He also had more to say about Liverpool’s captain, as he added

“Stevie is a sensational player and one of my all-time favourites.

“I can take so much of what he does. That is my job — to try and get to a similar standard.

“That is easier said than done but being able to train with him improves me as a player.

“It would be great to be selected for the World Cup but you have to work hard. That means I have to keep playing well for Arsenal.”

The England world Cup kits have also been revealed and below you can see both the home and away shirts which will feature in Brazil.

Designed by Nike, they have been manufactured to ensure that they are able to help regulate body temperature during what is likely to be a very hot summer for the players.
