Chelsea legend’s contract owned by Manchester City, not a loan

As Chelsea fans reacted rather angrily to news that Frank Lampard would spend the rest of the season with Manchester City, it has been revealed that he is not on loan at all.

It may seem to be a footballing case of splitting hairs given that New York City are owned by the same people who own Manchester City, but according to Sports Illustrated’s Grant Wahl a source from NYCFC told him that the player is not on loan with Manchester City and if you look at the statement put out by City (Manchester, not New York) you will see that they do not actually mention the word ‘loan’.

Wahl tweeted:

While Manchester City said in their statement

Manchester City can confirm that it has extended Frank Lampard’s contract up to the end of Manchester City’s season, enabling his continued participation in both domestic and European campaigns.

Could the ‘loan’ story just have been a smokescreen to enable Lampard to sign for Chelsea’s title rivals rather than the player just opting to stay in the Premier League after the London club let his contract run down?
