With rumours that Mikel Arteta could head to N17 to join Mauricio Pochettino’s Tottenham swirling around it’s interesting that the Argentine has done nothing but pour petrol on the flames.
The Arsenal captain is out of contract at the end of the season and looks likely to pursue a career in coaching but he may yet hope to prolong his playing career. That won’t be happening at the Emirates Stadium, so what about White Hart Lane?
Though he is captain of Arsenal, Arteta has always enjoyed a good relationship with Pochettino, who used to be a teammate.
“I love him and he loves me,” the Spurs head coach has told reporters. “You know our history from Paris Saint-Germain, when he was 17 and I was the captain.
“We have a very good relationship. The thing is rumours and you know I never speak about rumours.”
Well, Mauricio, you just did!
For now the Argentina is focused on the Premier League title race but next season is looming and he would deal a significant blow to Arsenal, even if it is just psychological, by landing the Spaniard.
Arteta has also been linked with a move to Manchester City, where he would learn under Pep Guardiola, but staying in north London must be an attractive option.
“He was the captain and he really looked after me,” the Arsenal midfielder said of Pochettino back in September 2014. “He was like a dad, even if he doesn’t like that word, but he has been a top person in my career.”
Sol Campbell is the last man to move directly between the two clubs and, even though Arsenal aren’t doing much to keep their captain, fans aren’t likely to take the news well if he makes the move up Seven Sisters Road.by
