Phil Thompson has called on Liverpool to drop Mamadou Sakho for the Europa League game against Borussia Dortmund on Thursday.
Sakho came in for large amounts of criticism in the wake of his display against Tottenham in their Premier League draw at the weekend, and Thompson would like to see Martin Skrtel back in the starting lineup for the game against Klopp’s old side.
“I’m not really sure what Sakho was doing in the first half against Spurs,” Thompson told Sky Sports.
“He was extremely lucky to go unpunished, which you can’t expect to be the case against this Dortmund side.
“He obviously had a very difficult game and Dejan Lovren did very well to bail him out, but if you leave him out that will wreck his confidence.
“I would say Skrtel is very much in contention to start in Germany, but it’s a very big call for Klopp.”
Skrtel, 31, has made only 18 appearances in the league this season for Liverpool and appeared in just two of their 10 games in the Europa League
He wasn’t in the squad for their 1-1 draw with United at Old Trafford in the last round and he was with the u21s for the home leg after recovering from a muscle fibre problem that kept him out from Boxing Day until he was named on the bench against City at the start of March.
Skrtel has played just 49 minutes for the first team since 20th December. He did, however, play 61 for the u21s against United on 11th March.by
