Injury boost for Liverpool as transfer saga takes new twist

Liverpool have been handed a massive boost with the news that Emre Can has returned to training.

The German was expected to miss the rest of the season with the ankle ligament injury he picked up against Borussia Dortmund in that crazy first leg and his return will certainly boost 888sport’s odds of a Liverpool win in their Europa League game against Villarreal this week. Liverpool are already the favourites to go through.

Can joined in with training on Monday and is expected to come into contention for a place in the squad for their game at Anfield in which they need to overturn a 1-nil deficit from the first leg.

Meanwhile, Mamadou Sakho has had his 30-day UEFA ban extended worldwide while he awaits an official sanction.

The defender plead guilty to taking a banned substance and is now excluded from all domestic, international and friendly fixtures. It is not yet clear how long his ban will be when it is finally delivered, but it is not expected to be a short one and could end his career with the club.

In transfer gossip, Liverpool’s hopes of signing Mario Gotze have taken a blow as it was revealed that Borussia Dortmund are ‘confident’ that they will be able to get him to return this summer. They believe that Mats Hummels desire to sign for Bayern Munich, and the German giants’ keenness to get their hands on the defender will give them the upper hand in any negotiations.

Liverpool had been confident that Jurgen Klopp’s influence could be enough to lure Gotze to England, but most experts believe the player favours a return to Dortmund.

Other gossip sees the Reds linked with Leicester’s Ben Chilwell who has also caught the attentions of Arsenal…allegedly. It is believed he would cost £5m.
